She had a bone marrow transplant about a year ago and thought everything was in the clear. Then, the leukemia came back. I had spoken to her a few times about becoming a donor. Now, for those of you that know me, you know that needles are not one of my favorite things. So, the thought of being hooked up to two i.v.'s for a few hours would NOT have been on my "to do" list a year ago. Times have changed. In honor of her, I really want to donate bone marrow. I can't right now because of this whole pregnancy thing, but as soon as I am able, PLEASE hold me accountable to becoming a donor. I really want to honor her life in some way, and this would be the only way I know how.
Off to search google for "bone marrow donor" info!

Hey Monica, Good for you!!
The good news is that now donating is not nearly as bad as it used to be. They don't have to drill into your hip anymore.
I think you could still sign up now, and you can just keep your account inactive until after the baby is born.
What an awesome way to honor your friend!
Wendy is right. They can either draw it from your hip or collect it peripherally from your blood (like donating blood). You can get on the list very easily with just a cotton swab from the inside of your cheek! Brian needs to sign up too because they "prefer" men first and then women who haven't had children (because of all the antibodies after pregnancy). The people they need the most on the list are "mixed" so if you have any mixed friends tell them to sign up!! Sorry to hear about your friend.
